The information strategy for the long term conditions NSF ensures that the implementation of the quality requirements in the NSF is supported by appropriate information. Information is provided for people with long term neurological conditions, families, carers, care professionals and the general public.

The Long-term Conditions Information Strategy has been written to coincide with the publication of the related National Service Framework (NSF) for long-term conditions and to support its quality requirements. It reflects the needs for information that have been expressed through Advisory Groups of interested parties, commonly referred to as ‘stakeholders’, who include representatives of the public and patients, families and carers, care professionals from a variety of agencies such as health, social care and education, charitable and voluntary organisations, managers, planners, commissioners and policy makers. It has also drawn upon information and opinions expressed in Levelling Up (April 2002) published by the Neurological Alliance and in Shaping the NSF for Long-term Conditions: The Views of Service Users, Carers and Voluntary Organisations (March 2004), a consultation carried out by the Long-term Medical Conditions Alliance and the Neurological Alliance.

The purpose of the Long-term Conditions Information Strategy is to ensure that the implementation of the quality requirements in the NSF is facilitated by the availability of the appropriate information for patients, families and carers, the general public and care professionals as well as relevant data and the means to record, analyse and interpret that data and to turn it into meaningful information for all stakeholders. The local actions outlined in the strategy are designed to guide service providers as to what they need to be doing to support the delivery of the quality requirements contained within the main NSF document. They should engage with their Local Service Providers (LSP) to determine their IT and information requirements that will enable them to deliver an improved level of service to those with long-term neurological conditions.
